It emerged in 1995, from the initiative of professor and flutist Sérgio Campelo, who is responsible for the artistic direction and instrumental arrangements of the group. All the components are musicians with erudite training: Sérgio Campelo, Jônatas Zacarias, Fábio Delicato, João Pimenta, Cláudio Moura, Antonio Barreto, Crisósomo Santos, Thiago Foumier and Frederica Bourgeois.

SaGRAMA’s first CD, released in August 1998, was made possible from an initiative by LG Projetos & Produções Artísticas using the municipal law to foster culture. Following the first CD, the group launched its artistic career. In November of the same year, they won the AESO Prize for Pernambuco Culture and were finalists for the Sharp prize.

In December 1998, SaGRAMA recorded the exclusive soundtrack composed by Sérgio Campelo for the microseries, O Auto da Compadecida, based on the work of writer Ariano Suassuna, adapted by Guel Arraes, Adriana and João Falcão and presented by Rede Globo de Televisão, in January 1999.

In 1999, the group signed a contract with Kuarup (a distributor from Rio) which became responsible for distributing their CDs in the national phonographic market.

Also in 1999, the Brazilian synchronized swimming team presented their choreography at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, to the sound of SaGRAMA’s music.

SaGRAMA is considered an instrumental group that was born successful and throughout its career has performed in various cultural spaces such as theaters, foundations, universities, libraries, schools and others. SaGRAMA’s music is also present in play soundtracks, dance shows, short films, commercial videos and educational CDs.

SaGRAMA composed and recorded the soundtrack for the film O Brasil Império na TV, directed by Fátima Accetti and Cynthia Falcão, made by Fundação Joaquim Nabuco in 2002.

In 2003, SaGRAMA composed the soundtrack for the play entitled Fernando e Isaura, based on the novel of the same name by writer Ariano Suassuna, adapted by director Carlos Carvalho. This play ran for three months and SaGRAMA’s musicians were on stage interacting with the actors. This event happened for another three months in late 2005.

The group’s most recent work is called: O Projeto SaGRAMA e músicos convidados. It consists of taking Timbres da Cultura Nordestina to the auditorium of the Centro Cultural dos Correios, in Recife, for musical performances by the group along with guest musicians, on Sundays, in August and November 2011. This way, each performance has a musician or group with different musical styles.

SaGRAMA has already released seven CDs. The last of them, Chão Batido. Stage, Picadeiro, by the carioca label Biscoito Fino, enabled the group to compete for the Brazilian Music Award 2011 edition, as the best instrumental group.
