TheArts and Crafts Lyceumin Recife was built between the years of 1871 and 1880, to serve as the base for the School of Crafts (Escola de Ofícios) run by the Pernambuco Society of Mechanical and Liberal Arts, founded in November 1836 and inauguratedin 1841.

The cornerstone of the building was laid on 23 April 1871, and its inauguration occurredon 21 November 1880, on the 39th anniversary of the Society.

Located at no. 281 Park of the Republic, next to the Santa Isabel Theatre, it was designed by Pernambuco engineer José Tibúrcio Pereira de Magalhães, author of other important Recife buildings, such as the Provincial Assembly – today’sPernambuco Legislative Assembly.

In a classical-imperial style, inspired by French neo-classicalism, the building has two storeys. The façade underwent small modifications during its construction and also in the 20th Century, but these did not cause any major disfigurations from the design by Magalhães. The external stairway, located in the façade’s centre in the original design, was replaced by a double and symmetrical set. Finished in marble and with an iron hand-rail, they lead to the upper level, where there are two large halls.

Like a basement, the ground level has a very low ceiling. Its façade features pilasters that go to the parapet (a masonryl edge that surrounds the top of the external walls andis intended to protect, hide orembellish the facade), which are finished by cement pinnacles(ridges).

As one of the institutions that delivered public education services to Recife, the Lyceum gave classes in design, music, painting, woodwork, architecture, arithmetic and reading and writing. It had a library with some rare works and a museum with a good collection.

In 1902, held in one of its halls was an art exhibition by Grêmio Artístico Crispim do Amaral, in which works in crayon, gouache, Indian ink, oil and watercolour were displayed.

The building, in good condition and preserved by the State of Pernambuco, is part of the Park of the Republic historical site and possesses tremendous historical, architectural and cultural value, having contributed greatly to the education of several generations of youth in the city.

Closed in 1950, the Lyceum’s building and archive are today under the responsibility of the Catholic University of Pernambuco, who use it as a school.
