It was founded on 26 January 1901, by Joaquim Maria Carneiro Vilela and a group of writers based in Recife, with the objective of "promoting the defense of cultural values in the State, especially in the field of literature".

The cult of São Gonçalo do Amarante has been celebrated for over 100 years, on the second Sunday of January, in the district of Itapissuma, located in the historic municipality of Igarassu, Pernambuco.

The municipality of Recife has 94 districts, which are distributed in six political-administrative regions (RPA). The district of Campina do Barreto is located in RPA-02, in Northern Recife.

It got that name because it had no trees and formed a vast, flat field. It was there, taking advantage of the area’s topography, the people of Recife built the Campo Grande Racecourse.

Capibaribe or Caapiuar-y-be or Capibara-ybe (or ipe), comes from the Tupi language meaning river of the capybara, or wild pigs.
