It was founded on 26 January 1901, by Joaquim Maria Carneiro Vilela and a group of writers based in Recife, with the objective of "promoting the defense of cultural values in the State, especially in the field of literature".
The cult of São Gonçalo do Amarante has been celebrated for over 100 years, on the second Sunday of January, in the district of Itapissuma, located in the historic municipality of Igarassu, Pernambuco.
