The professional corporations of the last century, remnants of the first centuries of Brazil’s colonization, started the Frevo or Carnival Clubs.

Francisco do Nascimento Filho, better known as Master Nascimento do Passo or simply Nascimento do Passo, was born on 28 December 1936 in the municipality of Benjamin Constant, Amazonas. He arrived in Recife in 1949, hidden in the basement of the ship Admiral Alexandrino.

“‘papa-angu’ was born from a game played by the sugarcane factor owners’ relatives who went out masked and badly dressed to visit friends at the Shrovetide parties – the old carnival of the 18th century – and ate ‘angu’ (polenta), a traditional food from the Northeast Pernambuco countryside.

Recife has a special flavor on Carnival days, it comes with a lot of hunger and thirst, because dancing to frevo requires a lot of sustenance, to reactivate your strength.

It was founded on 17 February 1947 by a group of lads from Amparo St and from Quatro Cantos, who went out onto the streets of the upper city with bare backs, wielding branches of a pitomba tree, a fruit tree native to Northeast Brazil whose bearing occurs in the first months of the year.
