According to chroniclers, Duarte Coelho, the first Grantee of Pernambuco, had a small temple dedicated to Our Lady of the Mount erected in wood and clay on the grounds of Olinda Hill.

The church of Our Lady of the Pillar, located in Nossa Senhora do Pilar Square in the neighbourhood of Recife, was built in 1680 on the foundations of the Fort São Jorge [St George]. The main chapel of the temple has the shape of a semi-spherical vault and is lined with very rare Portuguese tiles.

Located on the street Larga do Rosário in the Santo Antônio neighbourhood, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men was built in 1630 by the Brotherhood of the Rosary of the Black Men, an association formed by black slaves.

Located in the Boa Vista neighbourhood, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Boa Vista was built by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men.

The small church of Our Lady of the Rosary, located in the traditional Pátio do Terço [Rosary Courtyard] in the district of São José, is between the streets Rua Direita and Rua das Águas Verdes. It looks like an “ironing board”, some say: tall and slender, like a steeple, and with one tower only.
