These sculptures emerged in the Northeastern culture, more specifically in ribeirinhos (riverside dwellers) of the Middle São Francisco river around 1875–1880 and lasted until 1940, when the cycle of vessels in Brazil ended.
In Northeast Brazil in particular, it is one of the most celebrated festivals. Among its fundamental aspects are the quadrilhas [square-dancing] and forró [music], bonfires, balloons, processions and novenas, and the wonderful junina [June festival] cuisine.
Was Fort São Luís, in honour of King Louis XIII, and from this came the name of the city. Years later, São Luís was taken by the Dutch invaders led by Count Maurice of Nassau, who occupied it between 1641 and 1644.
A folk play such as bumba-meu-boi, belonging to the Christmas cycle snd extending to the Feast of the Holy Kings. It is part of the folklore of the Northern Forest region of Pernambuco.
The consumption of sugarcane juice is associated to the sugarcane exploitation and to the cachaça production process, which was improved since the discovery of the sugarcane wine, known as sour garapa, soon after sugarcane was brought to Brazil in the 16th century.
