The Popular Culture Movement (MCP) was created on 13 May 1960 as a non-profit institution during the first term of Miguel Arraes as Mayor of Recife. Its headquarters were in Sítio da Trindade, the former Bom Jesus Ranch, located in the Recife neighbourhood of Casa Amarela.

Before the existence of the pharmaceutical industry, which in Brazil only occurred at the beginning of the 20th century, humans had always sought relief in the therapeutic qualities of certain plants considered to be medicinal.

The history of the Recife Popular Ballet begins in 1976, when the then municipal secretary of Education and Culture in Recife, Ariano Suassuna, and the artist and director André Luiz Madureira, decided to put on an experimental show with popular dances and entertainment.

Luís da Câmara Cascudo in his Dictionary of Brazilian Folklore, states that ‘Reisado’ is the erudite name for groups that sing and dance on the eve of the Epiphany.

Considered a cultural heritage of Brazil (2004) and of Humanity (2005), samba de roda is a cultural expression occurring throughout the state of Bahia, with variations in historical, social and ecological characteristics, and is more prominent in the Recôncavo Baiano.
